The blade is ground into the deep and wide choil to allow easy sharpening over years of use. If used and sharpened properly over years, one would barely notice the height of the blade becoming lower because of the deep, wide choil.  The edges of your honing stone or sharpening device will also not be damaged by the ricasso during sharpening.

This specific knife has a Leadwood handle (Combretum Imberbi) or (Hardekool) which is a extremely hardwearing material.
